Spring Renewal: Gardening and Recovery After Cancer

Pepper seedlings

RSV + pneumonia + Daylight Savings Time + lot of schizophrenic weather = three weeks of “la-la land.”

I’m finally beginning to come around and take care of my commitments. I was delighted that I made it through the first quarter of this year without having radiation or additional chemotherapy. Feeling good, naturally, I said “yes” one too many times.

I’m not the only one. Several books have been written about women who do too much. I have never felt I did too much and was pretty happy being busy. When someone needs something and I have the skills to assist, I always think I can help. Well…. Then along came RSV and a hospital stay.

Like Superman (or Woman) I guess cancer would be my kryptonite.

So, I have been hiding out lately and slowly pecking away at my commitments, the first and most important is my Women in Ag presentation. For the past two years, I have been invited to speak at the Center Women in Ag Days and finally, I am healthy enough to say yes. The topic is gardening in pajamas and old wives’ gardening lore. It should be a lot of fun and I am looking forward to it.

A few days later, I’m on my way to Washington, D.C. to tell my cancer story to our legislators. This trip means meetings and training, not to mention getting over my fear of flying.

I can do this.

The worst part of the past few weeks is the lack of creativity. Usually, ideas flow between my ears like those atmospheric rivers on the West Coast. So, being stuck without ideas, my work flounders.

The positive potato thought I’ve had is I’m not the only one experiencing a lengthy bout with RSV or bronchitis. My badge of honor is that I have lung cancer and I did it. I’m on the mend. Give me some sunshine and 60 degrees (skip the wind) and I’ll be good as gold.

Things have been moving along, even if slowly.

  1. My pepper plants have emerged from the soil.
  2. I have written my cancer story for the American Lung Association website.
  3. I am one lesson away from completing my devotion writing class.
  4. One lesson away from my Totalitarian Novels class at Hillsdale College.
  5. I am almost done with today’s blog post.

I am disappointed we didn’t get a blizzard, but spring is coming. Being a spring baby, something wakes up when the vernal equinox occurs on March 20. So look out, I plan on rebounding and following through on my commitments.

So here’s to a hurricane of thoughts in my head today and from now on.

P.S. HAPPY SPRING.
