Highlights from a Busy Week in Morton County

Morton County and Mandan News
Last week was a busy one in Morton County for the Balcom family.

Monday, grandchildren Elle W. And Lucy B. Had lunch at the Old Ten in Bismarck with Grandma Sue B.B. followed by conversation and a Starbucks coffee in the Schilling Building on 43rd and Highway 83, Bismarck. It was a delightful afternoon catching up.

On Wednesday, Montana visitors to Bismarck, Ken and Mary Beth K. enjoyed a meal at The Tavern in Bismarck with Rob and Kathy H. and JC and Sue Balcom. The visiting lasted until almost 9 p.m.

Thursday, Grandma Sue B.B. was treated to a house cleaning by granddaughters Lucy B. And Elle W. The young ladies listened to golden oldies and worked for nearly two hours. Grandma Sue B.B. was so delighted with the clean house, that she treated the girls to a trip to Target to stock up on jewelry and makeup.

Friday visitors to the Balcom household were Claire B. And two-year-old granddaughter Audenia Mae, and Kelsey B. With grandsons Oliver and Finn. Grandma Sue B.B. served leek and potato soup. Oliver ate five ladles full. The little Grands played with all kinds of toys before everyone participated in a tour of the yard and garden. Grandma removed a tic from Finn’s pants before everyone left for home.

“Saturday at Sue’s” lunch guests included Sue’s brother and sister-in-law Curt and Kim, in town for a camping weekend at General Sibley Park in Bismarck. Also joining them for lunch from Colorado was cousin Jon Kaseman. Jon brought fresh walleye for the hosts to enjoy.

Sue and J.C. served up knephla and kraut with roast beef and gravy. It wouldn’t have been a true German dinner without the fresh garden radishes, watermelon and homemade rhubarb pie. Dinner was followed by reminiscing and laughter.

It’s with great sadness we report that cousin to Sue, Curt, and Jon, Cheryl Schwind Heiserman, passes peacefully away surrounded by family on Friday.

Sue attended services at Charity Lutheran Church on Sunday which happened to be Pentecost Sunday. The altar cloth was handwoven from hand-dyed fiber by Sue B. Weaves and gifted to Charity many years ago.

Are you laughing yet?

You can take the girl out of the newspaper, but you can’t take the newspaper out of the girl. If you grew up in a small town in North Dakota or are of a certain age, you will recall that the “news” included a weekly local gossip column.

It has been such a busy week of company, I couldn’t resist.

Oh Sue the gossip column in the local newspaper reminded me of growing up in the little town of Sisseton, SD. I always chuckled at that column in our newspaper. Guess there just wasn’t enough news in our town!!
