Challenges of Gardening (and breathing) in Extreme Weather

This was a good year to cut back on farmers markets. With the damage in my lungs and current medication, I have become sun sensitive, heat sensitive, and unnaturally tan. While it hasn’t stopped me from weeding and harvesting in the early morning, standing in the parking lot in this heat would be very uncomfortable.

But I miss it. I miss my customers. I miss working with Lucy. I miss working with Oliver.  I will miss the work.

Between the weather and the weather, it’s not been easy to garden outdoors. We have had many beautiful rainstorms this summer. Coupled with the heat, the humidity makes it nearly impossible to breathe. Add the days of Canadian wildfire smoke, and well, air conditioning here I come.

For some reason, the weird highs and lows and wind and rain have confused the vegetables in the garden, as well as, the gardeners.

My plants seem to be pushing for an early harvest, and then it’s bed rest for the winter. Drying garlic in this humidity is a challenge. Tomatoes are sparse by comparison to last season. Cucumber vines are rampant in the high tunnel. Like a good Stephen King novel, tripping over a vine might be the last time anyone sees you.

We are in for some cooler days in August and more rain. I do love thunderstorms, however….

This is the final week of preparation for my trip to Estonia. I am looking forward to my first trip across the pond (as they say in Downton Abby). I will be immersed in another culture alongside old and new friends. I may not be posting until I return to the States, but I am sure going to have some new stories to tell.

And, in the event the garden is still producing when I return, I may very well meet you at the market.

In the meantime, your prayers and well wishes are very much appreciated. I thank you.
